Search Engines like Google and Yahoo have become an integral part of the internet. They provide a key to directing people to places that will help answer their questions. And that is how we design web sites: to answer questions for people that are seeking answers.
Just putting a company brochure online that talks about equipment and service is not enough to attract someone looking for answers to their lawn and landscape problems. Let's look at an example.
Company A is a lawn care company in Indiana. On their site they have photos of their new power spreader and go into great detail about how fast they can treat a lawn. Not only do they show their power spreader, but they go into great detail about their new aerator.
Company B is also a lawn care company in Indiana. They have some articles about thatch buildup and why it's important to reduce compacted soils, and how thatch can be managed. They also have articles on why lawns turn brown; articles about weeds and how they can be safely removed from a lawn without the hassle.
Now a person living in Indiana has a problem with their lawn. It has some dead spots that suddenly appeared in the last week and they're rightfully concerned. Not knowing who to ask, or even what kind of question to ask, they turn to Google in search of an answer. They type in the search window: "brown spots in Indiana lawn."
Which company do you think comes up near the top in the search results?
Obviously, all other things being equal, Company B would probably be in the top 10. I doubt that Company A would even show up. Now if the person could only have entered in their search: "fastest way to fertilize a lawn in Indiana" then maybe Company A might have appeared near the top.
How many people do you think would type in that kind of search?
Not many I'd guess!
That's how we build our web sites. We focus our web sites on what consumers are looking for. That's why our web sites that have been around for 8 months or longer, regularly appear in the top 10 for any lawn care related search that includes an identifying geographic location.
We build sites that rank high in search engine results
Our custom web sites regularly rank in the top 5 for any lawn search that includes a geographic qualifier such as city or state.
Many years ago we built a web site called American-lawns.com. This is a site that is primarily a consumer web site about lawn care. It averages about 20,000 visitors a day, year round. One of the reasons we created this web site was to determine what people were looking for when they needed information about lawns. Part of this study tracks the terms that ordinary people use to find answers to their lawn questions.
We also developed a consumer landscape company called Landscape-America.com. It provides the same statistical analysis as the lawn care company, except as it applies to landscaping.
We then can employ that information in building our corporate web sites. This is just one of the reasons you can trust Yes Marketing to build a web site for you that will be successful.
Google tries to keep its search results as clean as possible. For that reason, they have a variety of spam filters in their ranking algorithm that try to remove low quality web sites.
Google's Sandbox, Google's Trust Rank and Google's domain age filters
These three Google filters all take a look at the age of a web site. Many web sites don't get very old. For that reason, Google implemented a filter that prevents new web sites from getting high rankings for competitive search terms. That filter is called Google's Sandbox.
New sites, especially new sites with new domain names, remain in Google's Sandbox for 8 - 12 months. After this time period it moves up the search engine ladder.
Google's TrustRank filter is closely related to that filter. Web sites with a high TrustRank get high rankings on Google. The TrustRank of a web site is determined by the age of a web site, the quality of inbound links and the content of the web site.
The domain age filter is another filter that considers the age of your web site. Web sites with old domain names are more likely to get higher rankings for competitive keywords on Google.
It's not easy to get around these filters. As they all consider the age of your web site, you basically have to wait until Google releases your web site from the Sandbox.
The best thing you can do is work on developing unique content of your web site to show Google's web page spider that your web site is a valuable resource for your topic. Make sure that your web pages are relevant to your search terms.
The next thing to do is generate quality inbound links to your site.
